I’m a Spanish illustrator, although having studied neither illustration nor design. Actually, I am a mathematician by profession. However, I belong to the generation of the late seventies. The one who had the chance to read the best era of Comic Marvels or DC, as well as living the Star Wars Saga, Indiana Jones, BTTF, The Goonies and a lot of amazing products targeted to kids back then. Those culture references made a deep impression on me. And my way of expression has been drawing, since then.
How long have you been in the t-shirt world?
I’ve recently been for a year in this business, and I’ve learned a lot in just that time.
What would you suggest to an aspiring t-shirt designer?
I’d dare to say that the best way to start is drawing about what you love the most. Don’t try to take advantage of an upcoming event (movie release, teaser, etc.) just to get a print. And, above all, try to draw about what you deeply know. Do something you, as a fan, can love. It’s the best way to connect with fandom.
What’s a day in the life of Saqman like?
Hard question, indeed. I wake up at 5am Monday-Friday. From 5:30 to 6:30 I work on my new design, alone in the dark. Then, I go to work until 3pm. After lunch (here in Spain we have lunch really late) I take my son to extracurricular classes or sport activities and take care of him until my wife comes back from work. After taking him to bed, at 9:30pm, I usually draw a bit more until 11pm. Weekends are the time to produce most of my artwork, and some Tuesdays and Thurdays… And now we are about to extend our family, so I guess it will be even harder. But, nothing to complain about, just the opposite.
Mac or PC?
Mac. Nothing against PC, but I haven’t had to format my Mac for four years, whilst I had to format my PC once a year. 100% reliable.
Post-apocalyptic world. No trace of human race. It happens that you’ve survived and managed to save…
3 tv-series: Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica (2004), The IT Crowd.
3 movies: Easy: A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
3 videogames: Not a gamer but… the latest Metal Gear, Battlefront and why not, Monkey Island.
3 cds: Jean-Michel Jarre: Equinoxe. John Williams: ET the Extraterrestrial. Franco Battiato: L’Imboscata (La Cura is my favorite song)
3 books: Dracula by Bram Stoker, The Vicomte of Bragelonne by Alexandre Dumas, The Miserables by Victor Hugo.
One t-shirt: One by me: “50 Years of the Doctor”. One by another designer? Power of Magnetism by my colleague and friend DrMonekers, one of the most talented designers I know.
You are the governor of the world. What’s the first thing you would do?
I’d get rid of all lobbies that rule the world, and all my effort would be put on working hard against inequality. It makes no sense that the 90% of the wealth is in hands of the 1% of the population.
You’ve just won a DeLorean time machine. Which historic period/time/moment would you like to visit?
November 5, 1955! No, that’s a joke. I’d really travel back 2000 years, to meet Jesus, the man, not still the Christ, to know all the truth about him.
